Motanka-doll is a Ukrainian people’s doll, symbol of women’s wisdom and family bounds. Motanka is made by winding only, it has no face and keeps the warmth of people’s hands, love and care with which it’s made. Not by chance has motanka-doll no face. It is either faceless or there is a cross in the place of the face representing the solar sign, the symbol of the Sun. It is believed to be a symbol of well-being and a very strong charm.
Motanky / knotted dolls (a kind of hand made dolls) – is an old folk dolls, is not just a Ukrainian souvenirs, it is a symbol of the hearth and the guardian of the Ukrainian family. Since ancient times, every mother did motanka for their children. Over time, these dolls have disappeared because they were replaced by factory-PUPS and the need for handmade doll simply disappeared. But not for a long time!
Dolls were made either hastily to calm and amuse the child, or carefully as a gift for a festivity, wedding, or birthday. Elaborated, lavishly dressed doll is valuable household property being at the same time the intermediary between old and young generations, the guarantee of prosperity, happy family life, and protection from evil forces.
From ages every family has a reeled doll served as a talisman, was a symbol of wisdom, guardian of the symbol of mother and ancestress of communication between generations, one of the oldest toys and sacred (holy) beings of our people, with thousands and thousands of years.
Ancient Ukrainian motankas had strong ritual meaning – a girl looking for a groom would make her motanka while singing wedding songs.
A motanka would be given to a child whenever he or she got sick. Ukrainians used to believe that the doll would take away the illness.
There was a time when Motankas could be found in almost every Ukrainian home – it was believed that they protected the house. Since folk dolls made of fabric were an integral part of the peasants’ household environment associated with tillage work and home hearth, they remain symbols of fertility, motherhood, and a kind of talisman from ancient times till nowadays.
